Gypsy Festival 2010

OK I know I have talked to a several people to get their inputs at Fall W. F. about next years Gypsy Festival. I know they said their is an event up north in July. I can't remember the name of it or when it is, All I remember is it is in July.

Please note this is not a Wild Fire event or not trying to compete with Wild Fire, Fire Drums, and any other major festival like that. Just good times with good people.

So with that being said, if the date of that festival does not fall on or close to July 23rd weekend, that is when the Gypsy Festival will be.

July 23 - 25, 2010
I am gonna ask for donations for the Port a john, and not a nasty one either, wrist bands and any other supplies need for the festival. The more donations I can raise the Better the pot, Please know, this is not going into my pocket. Please bring at least one can of fuel for the community fuel dump, and if you are breathing, Oil.

Tents Tents Tents. Yes their is plenty of room for tenting. 30 acres. Mostly woods. So come Fri and stay till Sun.

I am also thinking of maybe having a work shop or 2 for people who is interested in learning but never touched fire tools, or to learn from others. I have few ideas to try and get certain people out for the work shops. I am still working on the full details, but need to get this out so I can confirm the dates and to get the feed back from everyone. The Stomp brothers were here this year for another gathering I had. Just ask them about the area.

Vending. If you are a toy maker and would like to make a buck or 3, come set up and vend. Their is no vending fee. All I ask is that you keep it to the fire arts for vending.

That is all I can think of right now, but more to come.

Hope to see you for the first Gypsy Festival, and more to come I hope
fire performer needed!!!

so due to a variety of reasons, it turns out that burningman will not be a reality for me this year. it seems that the flow is not intent on taking me to BRC in 2009 and i learned long ago not to fight it. unfortunately i have committed to philadelphia fire conclave and this means that my unfortunate personal circumstances have become a problem for several people to whom i have made a commitment. so in a lame attempt to do something to make up me breaking my word to these people, i am hoping to find a replacement so that the conclave itself isnt jeopardized due to a lack of performers. (there is a minimum cap) so if.....

-you want a discounted ticket to burning man
-a chance to work with some of philadelphias most fun fire performers on a choreographed project
-to dance under the man before he burns

remember that there is no particular need for skill, its much more about dedication and willingness to work within the group. you dont need to be a superstar or anything like that. theres even a section of torches if you arent comfortable enough with any particular toy. this is a really incredible opportunity that i am unfortunately missing but if anyone is interested contact lucky or myself because theres no reason that these people shouldnt get to perform what weve been working on because of me. thanks

Performer alert.... copyright info

I have been meeting with the Maryland Lawyers for the Arts about Copyright Info for Performers and thought I would share a bit of what I have been finding out. Some of you may care and others may not. If you don't care please refrain from negativity towards the issue for the sake of those who do care. I know that I have been trying to find out much of this information for at least 5 years. There are many resources for visual and musical artists, but it is much more difficult to find out lots of this stuff if you are a performer. I have always passed by their free artists copyright workshops in the past knowing that I would only be sidetracking the topics from the painters and photographers that would normally attend. I was soooo right! The first workshop attended by those and most of their questions had to do with finding out if they could sell images that they were taking of others art work. It was interesting having the exact opposite issues!! ; )

The second of their workshops that I attended was primarily for venues who were being targeted for not paying the licensing fees that were needed in order to play or perform to and with copyrighted music. Once again I seemed to be the rare beast who actually cared and fought for their rights to be payed! One of those venues that was being targeted was also a venue that I was performing in 3 days after the workshop. (It was not a fire performance, but it was character movement improv based doing object manipulation and full body puppet stuff to music).

I am NOT a legal person so please also find out you're legal rights and responsibilities in you're location.

A Copyright lasts for lifetime plus 70 years. In some cases there is a copyright status beyond this. It is important to find this out.

Venues are responsible for copyright licensing fees, not you. Find out, when dealing with contract issues, if they have paid the fees or if you need to find copyright free musical material. Remember that we, as artists, should advocate for all artists to be able to make a living off of what we do. Musicians are much more lucky in that there are organizations which advocate for their legal and financial rights!!

If you have created a performance set to music and you have created a video, cd or dvd then there is a separate licensing fee that you must pay.

There is a common misconception that if you do a public performance that you do not own the copyright. Many photographers believe that just because you are performing means that they have the freedom to take and own the copyright of images they take of you're performance. This is NOT true. I know that this is a touchy subject and there are lots of web based sites which tell photographers and videographers that, BUT Performance work falls under the copyright of a intellectual copyright of mime category. However what you need to know is that in order to prove that the performance was yours the performance must be "fixed". Fixing a performance means that you need to record every performance.

There is more, but my net time is incredibly limited. I will attempt to get more out soon.

If you're in the Baltimore area I am attempting to work with the MLA (Maryland Lawyers for the Arts) to get a workshop which specifically deals with performer copyright issues. I will keep you all posted.

I know that some of you don't care, but please remember that you would never expect a dentist to work for free. We all have "reality camp" expenses that don't exist at Burning Man and art IS valuable and integral to humanity!
; )

burn brightly
burn responsibly
just don't burn each other!!

After their successful journey to a mysteries dessert island paradise in late Summer, Winkel & Balktick returned to their laboratory, determined to pursue the holy grail of time travel experiences. All through the Autumn, they experimented and tinkered. Time travel engineers from every age and nation came to visit them and offer their counsel, costumes, gifts and warnings.

Winkel & Balktick's plan shocked and frightened many of them. The time sages of ancient Greece feared that like Icarus, they would fly too close to the sun. The scribes of Babylon warned them that their Tower of Babel would fall. The Voodoo priests assured them that the Baron Samedi would not allow them to pass into the realm of the afterlife.

But still... they pressed on with their plan for New Year's Eve 2009. They dared to turn the dials and slides and switches and knobs all the way back, to the very beginning. On December 31st 2008 at 10pm, the Winkel & Balktick Time Engine was re-engaged and set out to explore the Mysteries of Creation, the epic tales that speak of the birth of the universe, plants, trees, beasts, spirits, humans and time itself. From the Garden of Eden, the paradise of humanly ignorance, to Ginnungagap, the endless void between the lands of ice and fire, they charted a most ambitious and exciting course.

The crew featured New York City's most experiences and imaginative chrononauts, who provided ample entertainment on the long journey with live music, DJs, dancing, performances, art installations, activities, games, debauchery, indulgence and surprises. Their time vessel was a vast and heretofore unmolested 13,000 square foot craft in a most convenient location.

Baltimore Fire Artist stuff

Hey everyone

I have been trying to work with the Fire Marshal's office here in B-more to earn our reputation with the city and expand. Last year everything changed, though, ending with a bunch of internal scandals... the fire chief, being the figure head, resigned. I put the word out on BROF, a list serve for organizers of regional BM events, that I was looking for help with our little issue.

I'm still plugging through, but trying to figure out if we need to start from square one with the fire department or if he [the new fire chief] has worked with reliable and responsible fire artists before.

I need some help with this.
1) If you ever see any fire performers in the B-more area who are playing with fire irresponsibly or dangerously *please* attempt to talk to them. Either educate them about fire safety stuff, or alert the venue/space whatever that this *is* an issue.
2) Please play responsibly!!
3) Educate venues and festivals about the bigger picture issues of why this is important!
4) Maintain boundaries!! If a festival or party is allowing stupid stuff with fire then do your best to stop it... don't just join in because you don't get many opportunities. I can't think of a faster way to destroy your own credibility. ; ) There is a space in Baltimore which doesn't allow fire performance because a self-taught girl from the area almost burned down the club. There is a festival that happens here and the guy who throws it doesn't care about the bigger picture issues for us and he's advocating for some pretty stupid stuff... I will provide more details if you need to hear them, but that should be enough to get you to take notice if you understand the delicacies and intricacies of this topic.

I'm still trying to get some stuff going for the benefit of all and there are still some incredibly dangerous things being done out of ignorance that is going to ruin this for everyone. If I'm the only one who knows this and I'm the only one who does/says something it just looks like I'm an asshole. Fuck that. I've always taken the approach of doing things for everyone's benefit.... *I* know the world doesn't revolve around me, but the types who do dangerous stuff that's going to ruin it for everyone think that the world should revolve around them so its incredibly difficult to reach them.

We need to deal with this together.

I have the support and backing of The Flaming Lotus Girls from San Fran behind me. They even sent me a copy of their resume (fucking impressive!!) in case it might help and they've been sending out emails to see if they can help with our fire marshal's office issue.

Thanks guys!!
Kate

p.s. If you want to help with the fire marshal stuff here in Baltimore with me and are interested in there being a space for fire artists to work, play and share knowledge together please let me know!! I've been attempting to work on this for a couple of years and found that with all the internal stuff that happened in the fire dept. that things got incredibly tricky last year.... they will only get worse, too, unless we work on this together. Its also about educating them, if you know what I mean!!
; )

Chris Bailey is coming to our home town, in Virginia Beach, Va. He will be doing a workshop here for all who are interested. Prices and other details are still being worked out! It will be held in a cheerleading gym..... tons of rooms... high ceilings... multiple floors. We will have a blast I'm sure. We are inviting everyone who is interested... bring your friends...
weather turning to SPRING!!

That means its time to think about spin jams again.

This part is for Maryland and B-more mostly, but a nudge nudge for other areas to organize for their area as well!

I was trying to work with the fire marshal's office here in Baltimore and a couple of non-profit arts groups, etc. with the long term goal in mind of being able to find an area for us to do Spin Jams with fire and I've been networking constantly for finding a good location, etc. [Its also because I'm trying to put together a proposal for something else that's fire related that I've been wanting to do fro a couple of years (I think I just found the financial grant to help make it happen too!!)] This last year the fire marshal's office went through some pretty drastic changes, but I'm hoping the things I started rolling weren't for naught. There were several circumstances where some fire spinners who think they are above fire safety created a bad name for the rest of us.

Anyway.... I, in typical Kate style, digress! lol

So here's what I'm looking for in Baltimore.

Location: inside city yet easily accessible and non residential area so music/drumming isn't an issue. I've talked to a couple of parking structures and have looked at a couple of park locations. There were several offers for parks that are outside the city, but *I* can't spearhead those since I don't have a car and I know we need regularity/reliability until it takes off. I also need to make sure that fire safety standards are met since I'm attempting to do this with the city proper so we are earning our legitimacy and they understand that this isn't going to backfire on them.... they are going to be hyper-sensitive to the issue since the Fire Chief was forced to resign because there were some stupid things that happened within the fire department and a trainee got burned, etc.

Help: I won't be able to do this without others. I was working with Suzy, Dustin and Natasha on a lot of this, but Dustin and Natasha moved across the country. I also need others to help network and feel out sites, etc.

This is NOT a party thing. This is meant to create a dynamic which allows us to be able to do more long-term and where we can teach/learn/share with each other.

Hmmmmm.... I guess what I need most right now is to get back to work since I still have to pay my bills!
<grin>

There were also several things that happened in Baltimore that make the process much more difficult for me/us to pull this off.

Philadelphia Fire Conclave Announcement

Dear everyone of my beloved family of friends,

Burning Man is an important part of my life. It's an important part of all our lives. In some great way, it has changed us all both directly
and indirectly. It has brought us together. Many of us have been bonded through fire, music, love, dance, and art. The Man does not
burn for just short of 300 days from now, but when that day finally comes and night falls on the playa, nearly a thousand fire artists
will light the night sky.

I have spent three years in that great circle and next year will be no different. When I joined the Philadelphia community, many of you
welcomed me, a bond that has lasted through great times and unfortunate circumstances. And through it all, there is a spark I see
in many of you, the spark that allowed nearly 100 of us to spend a week together without drama, the spark that makes us grow as a family
both in quantity and in closeness, the spark that makes each of us an active participant rather than a passive observer. I saw that spark,
and I knew that the year following our landing on the esplanade could only be done right with us landing in the great circle.

While it has become more competitive for conclaves to join the great circle, I have spoken to Crimson Rose, the wonderful woman who created much of what we love today in Black Rock City. I have pledged to her the commitment, talent, and presence of us as a whole, and whether there might be a place for us around the Man in 2008.

In bringing this all together, I am announcing my intent to create a Philadelphia Fire Arts Conclave. I have long envisioned a conclave of
a new magnitude, that I never thought was possible until I met every one of you. And I know there are more of those influential people to
come. This conclave will not be about trying to create any arbitrary status. It will not be about egos, competitiveness, or skill level. In
fact, as I made clear in last year New York City conclave, ability is not as essential as dedication. This conclave will not be about drama,
nor is it a professional gig. Rather, this conclave is about is bringing together our passions in one exciting and energetic
celebratory event. A moment on the playa, together, powerful, inspiring, legendary.

In addition, I am not singling out fire performers for this conclave. If you juggle, play a musical instrument, sing, can dance, or anything
else you have passion and talent for, there may just be a place for you. Even if you don't know how you could participate, but truly want
to be involved, please let me know. If you are interested in participating, in what I believe, will be the opportunity to perform
as a family for 50,000 people, please get in touch with me via email (LuckyBurns@Gmail.com) and let me know the following:

1. Real Name:
2. Playa Name:
3. Phone:
4. Email:
5. Where you live:
6. Fire Art: (if any):
7. Experience with Fire/Fire Safety:
8. Special Talents:
9. Have you been in conclave before:
10. How likely is it you will be at Burning Man '08.

Please take some time to send me this requested information. It doesn't take long and it would be a great example of that dedication I was mentioning. If you know someone who may be interested in joining this conclave, please have them do the same.

At this point, I am only taking names of those interested. I will be keeping a list and we will begin rehearsals in January. At the end of
this year, I will get in touch with everyone who contacts me with interest.

Thanks in advance for all your support in this great endeavor.

~Lucky

Hoopers,

I am going to be teaching Hoop Dance at Joe's Movement Emporium in Mt. Rainier starting in a few weeks (Nov. 12 is the first adult class session). Check out the latest blog posting on my Web site for more information: www.CapitalFireArts.com. And check out my videos (also available on the site) to see what I have to offer.

Miss Joule will be at my first class sessions offering her lovely hoops for sale. She is considering offering a "First Hoop Class" special of $10 off all hoops, so this will be a sweet deal!!!

I hope to see you there!

Sunday afternoon hoop and poi jam (Sunday, Sept. 30, 3:30 pm, Jefferson Memorial)

Let's go do our thang out in the beautiful sunshine before it gets too cold. If the weather is cooperative (i.e., no rain, temp. above 60 degrees), I will plop down my pile o' hoops on the "patio" side of the Jefferson Memorial (that is, the side facing the water and the sunshine in late afternoon) at 3:30 on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 30. Because of the proximity of the water, I probably won't be bringing a lot of extra hoops for beginners, lest my hoops end up as fish food. Bring cameras and get your Burner funkwear on! This will be a nice place for photos, especially later in the afternoon (and tourists will probably snap some of us, too).

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Guerilla Poets are going to be drumming on Monday evening (Oct. 1) in Dupont Circle. They have issued a standing invitation to us hoopers/poisters/troublemakers to come groove to their beats. Contact me if you need more info.

I hope to see you there!

I now know of two large events that are using Burning Man as a way to get free performers and I am sure that there are more out there.

According to Larry Harvey, when I asked him about this at the MD/VA film festival, stated that Regional contacts should let the community know. If you are a regional contact for Burning Man please pass this info on and help to get this information out there.

A gift economy at Burning Man works because it is a gift economy. When we are not in a gift economy this is not something that artists and performers can afford; we all have bills and expenses.

If you know of an event or a group that is using Burning Man as a way to get free spectacles for an event when everyone else is getting paid please help all artists and performers everywhere and maintain that this is not only unethical, but not acceptable to use Burning Man as a way to exploit artists.

This first came to my attention when an event that has hired me for years had the audacity last year to tell me that if I wanted to perform that "we are just like Burning Man and if you want to perform then you are volunteering for the event". Now since I had been hired by the event for quite a few years and I had been in the VIP Suites before and after the events when the main organizers would talk about the event I knew that DJs were hired the day before the event for $6,000, in one case and as an example, and I knew the logistics of how the events were run, I knew otherwise. I also was pretty heavily involved in the Planning Committee and the BOD of Playa del Fuego, the mid-Atlantic regional burn held in Delaware, as well as on the BOD for the Creativity Collective, which was going to be the first National Non-profit to support regionals. Because of these factors I was quick to tell the organizer of Starscape that this was NOT the case, that they were like Burning Man, and he should NEVER say this. This orgainizer emailed me back and admitted that I was right.

I found out about the second instance after I brought this up with Larry Harvey.

The friend who organized the MD/VA Burning Man Film Festival where Larry Harvey came to speak told me afterwards that the Virgin Festival, after finding out that she was involved with the local burner community, asked her if she could find Burners who would do fire performing for free.

Please help support artists and performers to make a living and help put a stop to this kind of exploitation of artists. These kinds of mythologies are much of the reason for why "The Starving Artist" paradigm exists.

Please also know that I am *NOT* talking about small events that friends are throwing or events, such as regionals, which are mostly if not ALL 100% volunteer run. This is an issue having to do with events that are money making ventures that make their money off of jipping those who make them money by making them a spectacular success.

Please lend your support to those who are constantly told that they should not make a living at what they do best.
Help spread the knowledge that an event will and should get what they pay for.

Thanks,
Kate

p.s. I am 100% behind a gift economy. What I am not 100% behind is something that is not gift economy based, making money off of those while claiming to be a gift economy when they are not. I will always support the validity and value of arts and culture and this will not allow me to see it parasitically used and abused.

Hello Everyone,
Fall WildFire tickets are now on sale. This will be our 6th performing fire arts training retreat, and a continuation of the amazing sharing, learning, and growing environment that so many of you have helped create. This fall will have even more emphasis on all of the performance aspects of our arts while maintaining the incredible level of technical instruction.

WildFire attendance is capped at 150 people. We sold out in the spring in four weeks. The fall will probably sell out in less.

For information about classes (spring's schedule is up currently), a description of the event, pictures, maps, directions, a survival guide, and to buy tickets go to - www.copperheadfire.com/wildfire/

xtra cargo room coming back from the playa?

We're going to miss being out on the playa this year :(

because I'll likely be in labor delivering our new twins :) !!

We're living in central VA (richmond area) and starting over from scratch financially. We'll be staying with friends for a bit and hoping for some kind of transitional housing to open up soon. As such, things are super tight on the money front. I have friends and family in Chgo who have done an amazing job of gathering up baby things for us, the problem is getting them back to VA. I'm hoping to stumble across some Burners heading back from the playa who have reason to stop through Chgo and have extra room in their truck, RV, etc. to bring back some or all of what's been gathered. I know there's 2 cribs (collapsable), 2 strollers, a changing table, cloth nappies and some baby clothes there for us.

If you know of anyone who might be willing to help out with this stuff and get it even close to us out east, PLEASE contact us!

in community,

Philadelphia Poi Workshops by Mike (ICoN) - Sunday, July 15

Hello all,

It is time once again for me to teach a workshop. The last one went well and I decided to make it a monthly thing. I learned a bit last time and will be putting them into play this time around. Some of the changes include: No Paypal - I will only accept money from walk-in participants. Also, the classes will be capped at a maximum of 8 students. You MUST get in touch with me either through email or phone to register. If you walk in and there are already 8 people registered, you will not be allowed to participate. If you tell me you are coming, you are guaranteed a spot! But please, only register if you are sure you can come. The price will also be slightly higher this time and it will probably stay here for all future classes. I also suggest that everyone who attends bring some kind of paper/notepad and a pen to take notes. Don't want to forget it all once you leave the class! Lastly, there was a little bit of confusion last time about where the workshops were being held. We are behind the Art Museum down by Waterworks. There is a large pillared building down by the water. We work under that, NOT DIRECTLY BEHIND THE ART MUSEUM. This way, rain or shine, we can still have the class. My current email is splittime@comcast.net and my phone number is 267-997-1925. Contact me for registration or if you have any problems. Thank you!

On to the schedule...

12:00pm - 1:30pm
Beginner Poi - The Basics

This one is the follow up to the Intro to Poi class. Here you will learn some of the basic moves beyond the simple circles. It is best if you have at least picked up a set of poi before but if you haven't, that's ok. I will go over all the basics and get you well on your way into being an awesome poi spinner!

Cost: $30

1:45pm - 3:15pm
Advanced Technique - Separation and Flowers

Open up and let loose! The separation and flower techniques were one of the biggest lessons I learned in my 4 years of spinning poi. Once you are comfortable with these techniques, your spinning will be much more free and open. You will be able to move your arms and body all around while still keeping control of the poi. This is one of the keys, in my opinion, to free movement in poi. Learn it, love it, spin it!

Cost: $30

Workshops by Aidon in Richmond: Two Poi and One Staff on Sat. June 23 with Fire Spin Jam Afterwards

Please join me in welcoming Aidon (Ian Smith) to Richmond, VA on June 23 as he puts on 3 workshops with a fire spin jam afterwards. This is coming very soon so please RSVP to let me know if you are interested in attending!

Ian Smith is a fire dancer from The Vulcan in Oakland, CA. He has been performing with a variety of toys for six and a half years. He has taught workshops on both coasts including Fire Drums in California and Wild Fire in Connecticut. His main focus has been the integration of object manipulation and modern dance. He currently performs with Copper Lantern Fire Theater, Fire Pixie Entertainment, Lucid Dream Lounge, the musical duo Think13, the modern dance company In Step Dance Theater, and has recently founded his own fire troupe, LumenAscent. You can see a few of his videos here and there.

Sample Videos:
Start with a search of Ian Smith Poi on Google videos.

Poi Dance – 2-3:30 pm
For anyone who wants to learn to move their body with their poi. We will work with the weight of the poi to influence body movement (bring your heaviest poi). Even if you are not into dance there will be lots of new technique. We will cover pendulums, extensions/unusual timings, useful turns, and hip transitions.

Int/Adv Poi Technique – 4-5:30 pm
We will start this class by exploring different ways of using learning extremely useful and underutilized moves, like the 2-beat weave and hip transitions. We will also cover upside-down pinwheel and ways to force an audience into seeing a difference between the 3-beat and 5-beat weave. If we have time we will cover plane shifting and opposite direction/split-time moves

Staff technique/dance – 6-7:30 pm
In this class I will share with you my unique approach to staff spinning. I will teach the advantages of never holding the staff in the center, different ways of turning, body movement ideas, pendulums, and then contact staff.

Fire Spin Jam:
Jam begins at dark and will go to ~2am. Bring your toys and fuel.
We will have to be respectful to my neighbors and be a little quieter as the evening progresses.

Cost:
1 class = $20
2 classes = $35
All three = $45

Location:
D-Zel’s House, zip 23836.
Send me a Tribe message for additional info such as street address and cell number.

RSVP:
Reply to either this post or send me (D-Zel) a message on Tribe.

Come on by and have some fun!

Looking for volunteers to perform for or assist Flights of Fire at the MDA camp in Maryland on Monday, June 25th

Hey guys, it's that time of year again! The MDA camp has requested a return
visit and fire performance from us on Monday, June 25th. It is an amazing
experience and I highly recommend it. You will probably never perform for a
more appreciative crowd. We usually arrive by 4PM and do a sock and streamer
poi workshop with the kids and their counselors. Then we join them for a pizza
and crab dinner, followed by a fire performance as soon as it gets dark. This
will be my fourth year attending and I'll be happy to hook you up with some
other volunteers if you want to hear more about the experience. You do not have
to be a fire performer to join us. The camp is located near Leonardtown, MD and
takes a couple of hours to get to from VA - less from the north/eastern side of
the beltway. Please let me know if you are interested as soon as you can.
Thanks so much, Brenda

Poi Workshops by Mike (ICoN) - Sunday, June 3

Hello everyone. After my recent trips to teach at Brandeis University in Massachusetts and the Temple of Poi in San Francisco, I decided to start teaching some workshops here at home. Thus, I am scheduling my first local workshops of the Summer for Sunday, June 3rd. They will be held behind the Art Museum at the columns.

You can pre-register for the classes through Paypal or you can walk-in and pay with cash or money order at a slightly higher fee. Pre-registration payments are accepted until 8pm on June 2nd and are non-refundable unless the class is canceled (in which case you will be notified ASAP via email). Weather you pre-register or are planning to walk in, it is recommended that you send an email to mike@phillyfire.org to let me know you are coming and tell me which class(es) you plan to attend. For any other comments or inquiries, please email me at mike@phillyfire.org.

The schedule is as follows:

12:00pm - 1:30pm
Introduction to Poi Spinning

For those of you who have always wanted to learn but haven't had the opportunity, here it is! In this 1.5 hour session you will learn all the fundamentals of poi spinning in a fun and friendly atmosphere from one of the east coast's best poi spinners. No poi? No problem! There will be plenty of poi available for use during the session as well as for purchase at the low low price of $8 (free for pre-reg). You no longer have an excuse so sign up today and take your first steps to being a poi spinner!

Cost:
Walk-in - $20, Pre-register - $15
(Added Bonus - All pre-register sign ups will receive a FREE set of practice poi!)

-----------------

1:45pm - 3:15pm
Advanced Technique: Tangles & Inversions

This is a class for intermediate to advanced spinners. You must at least be comfortable with doing the 3-beat weave in forward and reverse and experience with buzzsaws, isolations, and separations will help. The use of sock poi is recommended (though not required) for this class as learning tangles is much easier with them.

Cost:
Walk-in - $25, Pre-register - $20

Sunday May 20th
The Playa Del Fuego Fire Conclave
Invites you to join us at the Lake Potomac House for

Workshops with Richmond Superstars!!!

In support of the PDF Conclave effort Lucas and Danny are driving up from Richmond to teach us DC fire folks some of the secrets of their mastery of Poi and Staff. There will be two workshops, each an hour and a half long costing $20 each.

Poi and staves will be provided by Stiltdancer for those without tools. These may be borrowed just for the workshop or purchased. Fire Poi are $40 and Fire Staves are $50. You must RSVP to have tools waiting for you.

1. Poi by Lucas

1pm - 2:30 Sunday, May 20th

Work with Lucas for a little while and the greater mysteries of poi spinning will begin to unravel for you. Ideas such as behind-the-back, antispin, hyperloops, and airwraps will be presented. Explore not only the tricks themselves but the rhythm and style of their uses which allow you to incorporate these advanced movements into your existing repertoire.

2. Staff By Danny

3pm - 4:30 Sunday, May 20th

Danny has been playing with sticks his whole life. Imagine his surprise when he learned all he had to do was light them on fire and crowds would gather. Danny will be going over the basic and intermediary movements with the fire staff with a focus on incorporating these movements into dance. He will also offer his perspective on the mysteries of contact staff and how to mix these magical moves into an expanding staff repertoire

RSVP
To RSVP and get the directions to the workshops, please send your replies to valloup at aol dot com or leave a voice mail at 703-296-4675. Questions about poi and staves can be directed to stiltdancer at gmail dot com.

Brought to by the PDF Conclave, all proceeds will go to get these spinsters to The Man this year,
Please forward this to any lists you think would be interested.

Staff Workshop with Dave of the Pyronaughts with Open Spin Jam/Fire Jam Afterwards, Sunday, May 6th, 2 PM - ?, Bethesda

I've had a lot of requests for a spin jam. Here you go!

~ Sean

Dave leaves town next week. Before he leaves I want us all to have the opportunity to learn from a flow art master. He has agreed to spend next Sunday afternoon with us.

He has been practicing contact staff for almost 2 years, has been inspired by several different artists and has an instructional video for contact staff being released this summer. He has performed on the streets of Boulder and with projects such as Pyronaughts, Kannal, Lunar Fire, and Zilla and absolutely loves the art of contact staff and sharing that love.

I love contact staff.

The workshop comes in three parts. Please RSVP as soon as possible so I can gauge interest and resources.

1. Staff Building - For those without a staff
Sunday, May 6th, 2 PM - 3:30 PM
We'll go through a step by step process on how to build your own fire staff. Learn tips from experts in the art and build a staff in a manner best suited for its use as a contact tool.

Cost: Materials will cost each participant $50.00 or less (depending on what materials I can get my hands on)
Time: This part of the work shop should take roughly an hour

2. Contact Staff Workshop
Sunday, May 6th, 3:30 PM – 5 PM
Many believe that the art of contact staffing is an advanced form. We are challenging that idea. Contact, like most "advanced" forms, is simply not widely known. Not so much advanced as simply different. Come try it for yourself and you too will be wowing the cool kids with seemingly physics defying moves.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5099591670743507141&q=contact+staff+madness&hl=en

Cost: $15.00
Time: This part of the work shop will go till 5pm

To RSVP send your replies to stiltdancer@gmail.com

Brought to by the PDF Conclave, Capital Fire Arts, Stiltdancer and a Frantic Loup-de-Lou
Please forward this to anyone you think might be interested.

3. Spin Jam / Fire Jam
Sunday, May 6th, 5 PM - ???
This is open to everyone and we'll be doing fire as it gets darker. See the fire speaker in action. There will be lots of toys available and you'll get a chance to play with some of the new ones.

Location:
Sean's House
stiltdancer@gmail.com
Home: 240-396-6554

7606 Arnet Lane
Bethesda, MD

This is very accessible by car and relatively accessible by Metro/Bus. Call if you need directions (240-396-6554)

By Metro:
From the Friendship Heights Metro stop:
•	Take the T2 line http://www.wmata.com/timetables/md/T2.pdf. It leaves the station at the :15 and :45 and takes 10 minutes to get to Wilson Lane.
•	From there it's about a 3 minute walk, take a right (north for those from the Midwest) on Wilson Lane, walk to Arnet Lane (the second right, about 0.2 miles), turn right and walk to the end of the street. We're the last house on the right.

From the Beltway:
•	From 495, take the MD-190/River Road, exit 39, toward Washington (toward the inside of the Beltway)
•	Drive 1 mile then take a left at the signal at Wilson Lane
•	Drive 0.2 miles, then take a right at Arnet Lane (it's the second right)
•	We're at the end of the street on the right side – 7606 Arnet Lane

I’ve spoken with people that have taken Rovo’s workshops and they have nothing but great things to say about them. Hey, Burners,

If you’re going to the Burning Man Film Festival on Saturday (Arlington Drafthouse N Cinema, 2-8:30 PM, http://www.arlingtondrafthouse.com/?page=event&eid=395 and after-party at Dr Dremos, 2001 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington, VA with fire spinning) with Larry Harvey speaking, you should definitely consider coming to the Poi workshop on Sunday.

From Meredith:

We are honored to have the great poi spinner, Chris Bailey (aka, Rovo), in the Playa del Fuego Fire
Conclave this year. Rovo will give a poi workshop on April 29 to raise funds to travel to the playa.
Please come out and support our fellow poi spinner, and help make it possible for him to
represent our fire community on the east coast. Contact me if you'd like to enroll in the workshop
(see info. below). Many thanks!

POI WORKSHOP WITH CHRIS BAILEY

When: Sunday, April 29, 2007 1:00 – 4:00 pm

Where: The Lakehouse tennis court, 11489 Lake Potomac Drive, Potomac, MD 20854

Cost: $35

Contact Mer for workshop registration at:
tortugamer@yahoo.com or (703) 946-8660

The Workshop
Chris Bailey's poi workshop will cover a broad range of topics, from traditional techniques like flowers,
crossers, antispin, and longarm to more technical tricks, such as insides, inversions, polyrhythms, and
hybrids. Plus, if there is interest, Chris can also cover the basics of contact poi and other trick based
poi, such as throws and wibbles. A full list of topics will be posted as the workshop draws near.

About the Instructor
Chris Bailey (aka, Rovo) is a self-taught poi spinner from upstate NY who began spinning poi in July of
2003. After spending over two years practicing alone, Chris traveled to Toronto and Montreal to attend
workshops with Nick Woolsey in the fall of 2005. Having met his greatest inspiration in the poi world,
Chris began traveling to meet other poi spinners all over the Eastern U.S. Since then, Chris has taught
large workshops in Boston, Richmond and Atlanta, and also has performed at various music festivals.

Over the past couple of years, Chris has gained a level of notoriety in the online poi community for
videos he has posted on various forums. Here are some links to a couple of those videos:
Proceeds will go to the Playa del Fuego Art Grant fund

THEATER ADMISSION IS 21 AND OVER - PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE- THIS EVENT WILL SELL OUT.

Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind.

Each year over 40,000 people travel to Black Rock City in the Nevada desert to participate in an experience that is wholly unlike any found in modern society. For one week in late August they become part of an experimental temporary community, one which challenges its members to express themselves and rely on themselves to a degree that is not normally encountered in day-to-day life. The result of this experiment is Black Rock City, home to the Burning Man event. (www.burningman.com/)

A few simple rules allow this festival to flourish with creativity, and joy. Participants are entrusted to have personal responsibility for themselves and provide for their own needs in a sometimes harsh desert environment. There is no money exchanged at the event, rather the economy is built around each participant gifting his/her abilities to help and entertain others. There are few rules about how one must behave or express oneself at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and the experience of others); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community. Creativity rather than money is valued at the event.

The event takes place on an ancient lakebed, known as the Playa, a place that starts as a blank canvas where the participants can create the community as they desire. Participants are encouraged to live in the present; in a week's time everything created in the community with disappear except for memories of each participant. By the time the event is completed and the volunteers leave, sometimes nearly a month after the event has ended, there will be no trace of the city that was, for a short time during the event, the most populous town in the entire county. Art is an unavoidable part of this experience.

The DC/VA Burning Man Film Festival is an amazing collection of work in the spirit of the radical self-expression of Burning Man. The films and shorts included in this festival pan seven years of the event, starting in 1997 through 2003. The culmination of the festival will be a talk and Q&A session with Larry Harvey, founder and Executive Director of the Burning Man Project. Films will include: "Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man", "Gifting It", and "Beyond Black Rock"

Free shuttle bus to and from the Courthouse Metro Station (1:30-4:30pm & 7:00-9:00pm).
Capital Fire Arts seeking insured performers for Apr. 13th gig in Arlington, VA

Hello! Capital Fire Arts is performing at Artomatic on Apr. 13th. We have two sets--one at 9 and one at 10:30. I need *insured* performers--preferrably people who have worked out a choreographed piece together (e.g., a staff duet, or a poi/fire fan choregraphed piece). This is an unpaid gig, so all I can offer you is the glory of being the absolute shit of the DC region on that evening (and a free place to crash and some beer).

Please contact me asap through Tribe (and I'll reply with my non-Tribe email account and cell phone number).

Thanks!
Poi Lessons for All Levels in Alexandria, VA Offered by the Temple of Poi

Where:
Generation Dance Studio
816 N. Saint Asaph St
Alexandria, VA 22314

What:
The following poi sessions will be taught by Isa "GlitterGirl" Isaacs, founder of Temple of Poi, the premier poi fire dancing school in the world:

Sunday, May 13, 2007 from Noon - 6 PM

Session I: Noon - 1:20: Beginner/Advanced Beginner
Session II: 1:30 - 2:50: Beginner/Advanced Beginner/Intermediate
Session III: 3:00 - 4:20: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced
Session IV: 4:30 - 5:50: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced

What We'll Teach
Our fire dancing education session will begin with a discussion of poi practices and mindset created for success. For beginning poi artists, we will focus on fundamental movement principles as well as ensuring the artist has the basic moves in all directions. Then we'll work on how to transition between same and split direction movements as well as flowing between moves.

For intermediate and advanced Poi artists: Not only we will focus on honing skills (wall plane, multibeat, behind the back, polyrhythmic, split direction, etc.) we will work with combinations of moves and the flow between them. After all, what good does it do you to have a move that you can't string together with other moves? We will introduce some of our poi theory that explains how to understand more fully how to connect moves together and then we'll introduce some slick transitions (stalls, wraps, etc.) and some combos of moves you can use (and reuse like moves themselves) in your performances to add flair and fun to your poi play and performance time.

Please note: The Beginner sessions require you purchase access to the Temple of Poi Computer Based Training Program or have equivalent experience. All Beginners must complete the computer based training prior to May 9. This will maximize your investment at the training. The opening of the training will be a review of everything covered in the computer based training program and then we will build from there.

What to Bring
Please bring water, snacks and food as necessary, your poi, your flow journal, and your final tuition payment in cash. We will also have additional light poi available for purchase ($70) so bring cash for that as well.

Tuition and Materials
Sessions are priced as follows:
$40 1 session
$75 for 2 sessions
$100 for 3 sessions

Zan poi workshop in Richmond, Va on march 17th

Here is a rare opportunity to learn from one of the greats in the poi world. Zan; the author of one of the hottest instructional videos, encyclopoidia, will be in Richmond, VA on march 17th for four hours/two workshops of instruction and fire spinning.

BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE POI TECHNIQUE
This is the tech class you’ve been waiting for. All the moves you’ve wanted to learn, from someone who really knows how to teach. All levels are welcome; the class content is dependent on participant ability, and will be tailored to best suit the group. We’ll learn kicks, shots, and direction changes as stylish transitions between patterns. We’ll work on starting to use the spaces behind-the-back and under-the-legs with simple patterns and drills. Finally, Flowers and Planar Rotation will be introduced with easy to grasp examples. Focus will be put on getting 1-on-1 coaching for each person to correct the subtleties of technique.
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED POI TEACHNIQUE
Feeling like you need some new ideas in your poi swinging? This workshop is for you. If you’re already comfortable with a variety of patterns, this will take your spinning to a new level. We’ll work on some new concepts like shots, meltdowns (the most versatile group in the waistwrap family), and going beyond the behind-the-back weave. Time permitting, the class will move into tangles, wraps, anti-spin, more advanced flowers, and dodging daggers based on group preference. You DON’T have to be an expert already to learn these moves. Focus will be put on getting 1-on-1 coaching for each person to correct the subtleties of technique. You won’t be disappointed by this workshop and the new doors it opens for you.

Where?
3803 glenwood ave
Richmond VA 23223
(it's a big warehouse with LOTS of room between you and the ceiling, so feel free to play with jumps, tosses, and longarm :)

When?
march 17th
1:30pm - 6pm
First class starts at 1:30pm and lasts until 3:30pm (beginner/intermediate)
30 minutes in-between the two classes for foodage (byof), rest, stretching, and hanging out.
Second class starts at 4pm and lasts until 6pm(intermediate/advanced)
With spin jam afterwards

$25 each, or $40 for both workshops

Hope to see you there; serious poi spinners shouldn't miss this rare opportunity to see one of the worlds best in action.

Send me a message on tribe or at fireshred@gmail.com for more information, detailed directions, and phone numbers for people involved.

Peace!

Hello hello!!
My name is Jacquie. I'm from Vassar College in NY and visiting Baltimore this weekend for a confrence. I want to hook up with a fire jam Friday or Saturday night, else I will be forced to spin outside my hotel by myself... possible, but not nearly as much fun. Anyone know of a fire jam or want to create one??? I'm up for spinning any time anywhere. Also, I'm an acrobalancer. Anyone want to do some partner balancing??? I'll check this often in the next two days. If anyone's interested, let me know. I'll exchange emails/numbers/contact info and we'll have ourselves a nice toasty warm fire jam yet...

Details
The following poi sessions will be taught by Isa "GlitterGirl" Isaacs, founder of Temple of Poi, the premier poi school in the world. There will be three teaching sessions and a special performance and celebration sharing opportunity as follows:

Saturday, March 3, 2007: Beginners:
Part I: 11:15 am - 1:00pm
Lunch: 1:00 - 2:15 pm
7:30 - 9:30 PM
Sunday, March 4, 2007: Intermediate/Advanced:
Part I: 11:30am - 1:00pm
Lunch: 1:00 - 2:15 pm
Part II: 2:15 - 3:45 pm
Sunday, March 4, 2007: Beginner Fire:
4:00 - 7:00 PM (with a short break)
Lessons for Beginning Poi artists

Our session will begin with a discussion of poi practices and mindset created for success. For beginning poi artists, we will focus on fundamental movement principles as well as ensuring the artist has the basic moves in all directions. Then we'll work on how to transition between same and split direction movements as well as flowing between moves.

The beginner session includes access to the Temple of Poi Computer Based Training Program. All Students must complete the computer based training prior to March 3. This will maximize the student investment. The opening of the training will be a review of everything covered in the computer based training program.

Upon registering for the course, students will be given access to the training as well as being shipped a set of practice poi included in the tuition.

Beginner Fire Lessons

This session will focus on fire safety and permitting information so students garner an understanding of what the risks and appropriate precautions are when handling fire. The session will then find students creating their fire poi custom sized to their ideal length.

Weather permitting, we will then proceed outside and spin fire. The training session will begin with everyone using duvetyn to extinguish a flaming tool. After each artist will participate by both acting as a safety for other artists as well as spinning fire for the group. We encourage students to read our fire safety information prior to arriving and we invite artists to bring guests who may want to learn fire safety procedures and witness their first fire spin as part of the workshop.

The tuition for this session includes all the materials necessary to make a set of fire poi as well as a piece of duvetyn, a fire retardant fabric used to extinguish fire.

Lessons for Intermediate and Advanced Poi artists

For intermediate and advanced Poi artists: Not only we will focus on honing skills (wall plane, multibeat, behind the back, polyrhythmic, split direction, etc.) we will work with combinations of moves and the flow between them. After all, what good does it do you to have a move that you can't string together with other moves? We will introduce some of our poi theory that explains how to understand more fully how to connect moves together and then we'll introduce some slick transitions (stalls, wraps, etc.) and some combos of moves you can use (and reuse like moves themselves) in your performances to add flair and fun to your poi play and performance time.

Intermediate students will also gain access to the Temple of Poi Computer Based Training Program. We anticipate this information is merely a review for intermediate students and will provide an understanding of our terminology rather than skill education. Upon registering for the course, students will be given access to the training included in the tuition.

Performance and Celebration

Saturday evening will find GlitterGirl performing for the students. All participants in any of the sessions as well as their guests are welcome to attend the celebration to share ideas, enjoy the performance and taken in the splendor of Shenandoah National Park. Intermediate and advanced students are welcome to create a performance for the group as well. Performances will be held indoor and, if weather permitting a fire performance will happen outdoor as well.

What to Bring

Please bring water, snacks and food as necessary, your poi, your flow journal, and your final tuition payment in cash. We will also have additional light poi available for purchase ($70) so bring cash for that as well.

Wicking change press release from Fire By Riz..

Greeting fellow Pyros,

Sorry to spam the group like this. But I don’t know how long this deal will last. We want as many people as possible to save..

Time to pass on some super prices to the people who made this type of pricing possible .Because of our large customer base we order massive amounts of wicking. Fire By Riz was able to negotiate pricing Directly with the largest Mill In the USA. The Fire By Riz staff was very happy with the thought of getting new Harleys and pricey imported sports cars with our new found profit. But we all agreed to share this with everyone in the fire community.
This is the same high quality professional grade wicking Fire By Riz and most of the other fire tools makers have always used. The only difference is the below wholesale prices. Due to offering this below wholesale price to everyone the price doesn’t get any cheaper unless you buy 10 or more rolls of the same size wicking. Email or call for over 10 roll purchase quote.
All of Fire by Riz's wicking is 1/8' thick don't be fooled by a same priced wicking that is only half as thick and requires twice as much.

Wicking by the roll (100 ft)

1" x 1/8" - $70.00
2" x 1/8" $115.00
2.5" x 1/8" - $157.00
4" x "1/8 - $250.00

Wicking by the foot

1" x 1/8" - $0.75
2" x 1/8" - $1.25
2.5" x 1/8" - $1.75
4" x 1/8" - $2.75

Rope by the foot This is the good Kevlar cored rope not the glass cored rope

3/8" diameter Kevlar rope $1.00 per foot
1/2" diameter Kevlar rope $1.50 per foot
5/8" diameter Kevlar rope $1.75 per foot
3/4" diameter Kevlar rope $2.25 per foot

We have also added some new style snakes to our line. Make sure to take a look. I am sure they will make even the biggest pyro happy!

These new prices and items are now posted on my site.
www.firewhip.com

Kindest regards,

I'm wondering particularly about Montgomery County, MD and Takoma Park, MD, but I'd like to start a "How to get permits for fire performing" guide for the fire community. So any info on this subject would help get me started.

Fire Performing at NYC Decompression

Dear Fellow Fire Performers,

As I take a deep sigh of relief, I can finally publicly speak about fire at NYC Decompression. It has been an unusually difficult situation this year due to unforeseen complications between our venue, 3rd Ward, and fire permits. However, fire is officially on, and I look forward to seeing so many of you show off your talents for the New York burner community.

A few of you have been in touch with me already, but it is important that everyone interested in fire performing/safetying at decompression send me a quick message with:

Your Name:
Playa Name:
Fire Tools:
Phone #:
Email:
Emergency Contact Info:

I will send out a letter on Friday, acknowledging that you are on my list.

Additionally, Decompression has changed its policy and there will be ADVANCED TICKETS ONLY. This means that you must buy your tickets online at http://www.brcnyc.com/tickets.htm before Saturday morning or you will not be let into the venue. That would truly be a bummer. Burn bright you pyros!

Much Love,
Lucky

If you are currently or aspiring to be involved with the dance, drum or fire performing arts then don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn and grow at the largest north east gathering built just for you. The spring WildFire retreat had over 100 artists attend and taught more then 30 classes in a verity of disciplines. This fall we have expanded added more class types and will be offering public transportation access (check out the website for details). We are also opening an indoor area for performing arts equipment vendors to come and show their wares. This is a great opportunity to see, hold, and play with different toys made by different folks. If you are a vendor of performing arts toys and want to participate in this way, please email chad@freedomthrufire.com (no charge to setup, you just have to be open to educating everyone on your stuff).

Summary Info
Sept 11th – 17th
Public Transportation is available
Located at a picturesque Southern CT river front location with hot showers and full bathrooms - directions on website
Car camping type venue – with many pre-built tents and bunk beds if you want them (first reserve, first get)
There are no public audiences at WildFire just performing artist
Classes are taught all four days, with spontaneous sharing happening constantly
Website - www.freedomthrufire.com

Tickets are limited to 150 and ticket prices go up on Sept 1st ($75 now $100 after the 1st). Many people have commented that this is the cheapest and best way they could spend a three day weekend (they really say that – ask them). All food is included in your ticket price and it is good food.

Best wishes to you no matter the route your path takes you on. If these performing arts are a part of your path, then I really hope to see and share with you at WildFire. FYI - For those attending Burning Man, you can check out the WildFire Tribe site to find other north east performing artist that are attending BM and where we are having meet ups and stuff (http://tribes.tribe.net/wildfireretreat/).

Walk in peace,
Chad

Greetings to All,
Is there a possibility of getting together for the weekend of Aug. 28 to Sept. 4, 2006 at
Highland Farm which is the highlands of the Village of Black Rock,
Pa. for those that may not be heading out west. To get
this along I started an email list that will hopefully offer a place to
discuss and organize these thoughts of what is to be at>
groups.yahoo.com/group/bla...land_east/
I can not imagine doing any of this unless there is enough need for
such and I can not imagine doing this unless those in the community
wish to make it happen... so with fate to those thoughts... if
anyone wishes to also see this happen that may not be heading out
west and may want to make it happen in the hills of Black Rock
East... join the list and do it!
I realize that the calendar is full of other local burn community
events and such during the rest of the year and labor day weekend
revolves around a desert playa. We just can't make the trip and
labor day weekend has a tradition around these hills for a burn!
I am not sure if to take any of this to another level for labor day weekend at Highland
Farm without knowing the need or the support of the local burn
community. Please join the Black Rock Highlands
East list...and if you wish... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pass on this
info to anyone, other burner lists, etc... that you may feel to be
interested and we can see from
there. I am mostly hoping that the Black Rock East Burn "Rise of the PHOENIX" Aug. 28- Sept. 4th will BE!!!
till then...
Peace, Ed

The University of Maryland was kind enough to ask me to come give a lecture this week, so I am flying into D.C. on Wednesday morning. Since funding for the temporary sculpture commission did not quite come through, and I had already booked my airline / accommodations, I seem to have two open days, and thought it might be nice to connect up with the community, learn about some fun things to do / places to go while I am in town.

Wanna come out and play?
[please contact me through my profile directly]

My only plans at the moment are do go check out the Hirschhorn Museum [as I have not been there in quite some time], and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial sculpted by Maya Lin.

Ciao,
Fredrick

Hey guys, it's that time of year again. Some of us are heading up to camp Maria
in Leonardtown, Maryland to entertain the kids at the MDA camp. We spend a few
hours in the afternoon working with them using streamer and sock poi, then we
join them for dinner, and once it gets dark, we do a kick-ass fire performance. They are one of the most appreciative audiences ever. The date is
Monday, June 26th, and we usually leave by 1pm and return by midnight or so. I
know many of you have participated in this event before and can vouch that it is
an amazing experience. I picked up the torch :) from Dtoo to keep this
tradition going. He is trying to coordinate a return trip from Canada to join
us there. If you are interested and/or would like more information please
contact me. If any of you who have shared this wonderful experience
would like to write a short testimonial to the Tribe that would be great. Thanks
guys!!

as long as your careful and considerate don't put anything at risk of course, and your an obviously adept in spinning. can the cops take away your staffs or what ever. I've heard of people gettin there fuel takin. But I don't want to risk it. I want to spin down at the harbor here In Baltimore, unsure of a good place here in the city. I just moved here and don't know of a spot to burn besides my concrete townhouse backyard...

Anyone got any input on this would be appreciated.

Firecircle event: SpiritFire Festival, July 5-9, New Lebanon NY

I’m writing to invite you to join us at SpiritFire, a fire circle gathering that’s being held July 5-9th in New Lebanon, NY. That’s only eight weeks away!

SMALL AND SWEET:
SpiritFire is a small festival. The mountaintop site holds only 200 people. The small size means there’s a lot of room – room to play, room to dance at the fire, and room to be heard. We make space for diverse sounds: djembes, didgeridoos, singing bowls, bells, voices, and silence. There’s also room to participate. You can offer something during the firecircle, or collaborate with the visual arts group to prepare the dancing space. And with a group this size, after five days and four all-night circles, you come home with strong connections.

COMMUNITY:
We are honored to host presenters from New England, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and California. They bring their passionate skills in everything from frame drumming to breathwork, ta ke ti na and shamanic dance. We are anticipate the presence of an initiated master drummer and dancer of the Haitian Vodou (Rada Rite) tradition, coming to offer his knowledge of music as a ritual process. Participants are joining us from all over, as well, including some new fire family from Australia – the flame keeps growing!

PARTICIPATION:
There is no audience at Spiritfire; participation is encouraged in every part of the weekend. Dance, or drum; join in building the ritual space by sharing your own artistic talents. Spin fire after dinner. Saturday afternoon has been left open for anyone in the community to offer a workshop around their particular skills or passions. Every year is different as new energies and ideas are shared within the circle. Come and share yours.

For a complete description of the festival or to register online, please visit www.SpiritFireFestival.org . You can also join the SpiritFire tribe at www.spiritfire.tribe.net .

We hope to see you at the fire.

Burning Man 2006 Fire Conclave

Hi everybody. It's time to get our 2006 Fire Conclave team moving on our way to Burning Man! First off, I would like to thank Denise for all of her hard work the last two years as our Shin and for helping me make a smooth transition into the job. Thanks to Denise, the Playa del Fuego Conclave has already been registered with Crimson for this year's burn. That was only the first step for us.

The next step is for interested performers to register with me so we can begin to work on our choreography. In the next couple of weeks, we will start meeting to plan and practice our Choreography for a video of our performance which must be submitted to Crimson. There are currently 44 teams registered, and we must be invited into the inner circle. Not all teams will be chosen. I know we have tons of fire talent here, and now we get a chance to show off some of our mad skills. We are at a slight disadvantage due to the large geographic area the PDF conclave incorporates (NJ, Philly, Baltimore, DC, and surrounding areas) but we are working to make this as painless as possible for our participants. One of our members who lives in MD just inside the 495 Beltway and near the BW parkway, has graciously volunteered her home for meetings and her yard for practices. That makes the travel time for the northern VA and Baltimore people pretty much even - hopefully less than 40 minutes each way. Denise has volunteered to stay on board to coordinate with any of our more northern-based performers. If there is enough interest we may have that part of our group create and film their own segment for our application video. There are fire spin jams in Philly on Sundays, and in Annandale, VA on Thursday nights. I have recently heard that there will be also be spin jams in Baltimore on a regular basis soon.

What I'm offering you is a chance to show off your stuff will you give back to the Burning Man community. The conclave energizes and entertains the crowd before the man burns. Plus, you will get to stay inside the inner circle for the burning of the Man. It's hard to express what an amazing experience the Conclave can be, but if you need convincing I'd be happy to tell you about my first conclave - it still ranks up there as one of the highlights of my life.

What I need from you is a firm commitment of your involvement. I would like to hear back from you by April 2nd (this Sunday night) if you are planning to participate. I realize that people's plans for Burning Man sometimes change, but by now you probably have a pretty good idea about whether you think you are going out this year. I am hoping to plan our choreography by focusing on our strengths, and I'd like to create a strong visual impression. We will probably try to wear coordinating outfits - like black on the bottom (jeans, leather pants, etc.) and something red on top (tank tops, red bikini tops, painted on red flames, etc.) Our first meeting will be to get together play with our fire toys and brainstorm ideas for our video. We will probably try to schedule two practices per month with a large group run through at PDF. Our video will be shot in early June. I should also mention that it is possible that I can help conclave members out with discount tickets to Burning Man if you still need them.

We will also have some positions on our team for fire safeties. There will me more information on the roles and requirements for safeties coming soon, but if you are interested, please let me know.

All interested fire performers please email me with your name (real and playa), preferred email address, location, and fire tools of choice. I'll get back to soon with information on our first meeting.

Thanks, Brenda (Silver Raven)

Hey All!! This is it! This is the social event you have been waiting for!!! ;-)

as many of you know, I've been working on opening up a new studio in the NVa area - a studio for Non-traditional applications of traditional arts, a place for artists in the community who can't seem to find any other place to practice their arts - (I'm talking about fire here people!)

well, we still have a few huge big ticket items to get to make the studio totaly and 100% operational. little things like....a FLOOR! and mirrors would be nice too. so instead of just begging for money, we decided to throw a fundraising party....and what better day to throw a party then Maltese Freedom Day!

everyone should come out, if for no other reason than to say hi! I miss seeing alot of you!

check out our event listing - and show up!

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):
